Screen Time vs Screen-Free: What the Research Actually Says (And What to Do Monday Morning)

Every few months, a new study about children and screens makes the rounds. The headlines are usually alarming. Parents feel guilty. Pediatricians reassure. Nothing really changes.

Let's review what we actually know.

What the major health organisations recommend

The two most cited authorities are the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

For children under five, the guidance is clear. The WHO recommends no sedentary screen time at all under age one, and no more than one hour per day for ages two to four — with less being better [1]. Worth noting: WHO formal guidelines stop at age five, so for older children, the AAP is the main reference.

The AAP aligns on the early years, advising no screen time before 18 months (except video calls) and a maximum of one hour of high-quality programming for ages two to five [2]. For children six and older, their 2024 updated guidance moved away from strict time caps toward a more nuanced framework — one that emphasises content quality, co-viewing, and context over raw minutes [2].

This distinction matters. A child watching an educational documentary with a parent who discusses it afterward is in a fundamentally different situation from a child passively scrolling short-form videos alone. The research supports this.

What "too much" actually does

The evidence on excessive screen time is consistent across three main areas.

Developmental outcomes

A longitudinal study by Madigan et al. published in JAMA Pediatrics followed 2,441 children and found that greater screen time at 24 and 36 months directly predicted poorer performance on developmental tests — covering communication, motor skills, and problem-solving — at later ages. Crucially, the researchers confirmed the direction runs one way: screen time affects development, not the reverse [3].

Sleep

Screen use before bedtime, particularly on phones and computers, disrupts melatonin production and delays sleep onset. The downstream effects on mood, behaviour, and concentration the following day are well documented [4].

Executive function

Studies show that earlier onset and higher cumulative screen use are independent predictors of poorer executive function — the cluster of skills covering planning, impulse control, and flexible thinking. The most cited mechanism is displacement: time on screens is time not spent on the activities that build these skills [3].

What screen-free play actually builds

Developmental psychologist Lev Vygotsky observed decades ago that social make-believe play was the ideal context for cognitive development. Research published in MDPI's Education Sciences journal (Zych et al., Rostan et al., 2025) confirmed that free play initiated by children themselves produces the highest proportion of self-regulatory behaviours — the same behaviours that screen time appears to erode [5].

The Harvard Center on the Developing Child identifies three specific dimensions strengthened by play-based learning: memory retention, cognitive flexibility, and the ability to filter distractions and maintain focus [6].

A 2026 review by Curious Neuron found free play consistently associated with creativity, imagination, emotional regulation, and social problem-solving — outcomes that build resilience across a child's life [7].

The one question that changes everything

Here's where most screen time advice goes wrong: it treats all screen-free time as automatically beneficial and all screen time as automatically harmful. Neither is true.

A child staring at a wall isn't building executive function. A child watching a well-produced nature documentary and asking questions is getting something valuable.

The most useful question parents can ask is this:

What is this screen time replacing right now?

If it's filling a moment where you genuinely need your hands free: cooking, a work call, a moment of real exhaustion and that's a reasonable trade that most parents make. The question is about whether screens are consistently replacing movement, imaginative play, or the chance for a child to work through boredom on their own. That's where the cumulative cost shows up.

The Belxi point of view

That said, we wouldn't recommend letting a child scroll mindlessly through low-quality content. It's worth acknowledging that parents scrolling in front of their children is part of the equation too. Children notice what adults do more than what they say.

Video games and smartphone games are a slightly different matter and benefit from time limits or parental oversight. Regardless of content, screens work best after some form of active or creative engagement, ideally at least an hour before bed for anything on a phone or computer.

The goal was never to eliminate screen time. It was to make sure children get more (not less) of the things that matter: social, sensory, creative, and physical experiences. Childhood is when the brain builds its most connections, and a wide variety of activities is what best supports that development. That's exactly the gap Belxi was built to fill.

What to do Monday morning

You don't need to overhaul anything. Three small, evidence-consistent adjustments:

  • Protect a window before screens, not just after. Give children 20 to 30 minutes of unstructured, screen-free time before screen access begins. If you need ideas for that window, that's where Belxi comes in.
  • Ask "what is this replacing?" rather than watching the clock. Thirty minutes of passive solo scrolling before bed is more disruptive than an hour of co-viewing at 3pm. Timing and context matter as much as duration [2].
  • Make the screen-free alternative concrete, not abstract. "Go play" doesn't work. A specific, matched activity does. Children engage when they feel capable but slightly challenged — as we explored in our previous article on personalization [8]. Vague invitations get ignored; concrete starting points get traction.
